Treatment and Assessment of Chronic Parasitic Infections

Chronic parasitic infections with organisms such as Giardia lamblia, Blastocystis hominis and Entamoeba histolytica are common even in England. This is in part a reflection of much greater worldwide travel. These organisms can remain in the gut for decades and are frequently under-reported by microbiological laboratories. We can arrange for stool samples to be sent to Genova Diagnostics Europe (GDX). They use an Optimized Parasite Recovery (OPR) technique which involves combining three stool specimens submitted on consecutive days for intestinal ova and parasite examination. This varies from the traditional approach of using individual samples for parasitic evaluation. A study by Kelton et al. compared the OPR methodology with the traditional individual specimen collection in over 15,000 patients. The results demonstrated an increase in parasite detection from 18% using individual samples, to 22% using the OPR methodology.
